Allan Scherlen released the following statement:
Today I am pleased to announce my candidacy for a seat on the Boone Town Council.
I have been a resident of Boone since 1992. My wife Renee and I have two children, Nicholas (15) and Antonia (11). I have been an involved citizen of Boone for many years and am looking forward to bringing my skills and perspectives to addressing some of Boone’s most pressing challenges.
I have served as a member of the Boone Board of Adjustment since 2003, where I have developed a deeper understanding of the importance of balancing the need for change with preserving what we all love most about Boone. As a resident of the Stadium Drive and Dogwood neighborhood, I am keenly aware that one of the most important issues for the future of our town is that of maintaining a high quality of life in Boone’s neighborhoods. I believe that Boone’s future success and livability rests with sound decisions about development and long-range planning.
I am also a strong advocate for improving alternative transportation routes such as sidewalks, bike lanes, and greenways to help lessen traffic and provide alternatives to our dependency on driving short distances in the town. Times are tough financially, and money is hard to come by, but we need to look in every corner and consider every possibility for moving forward on alternative transportation needs.
I am also committed to looking at ways to improve Boone’s downtown. Most especially, we need to focus on fixing serious infrastructure problems and improving the overall appearance for this area.
As the parent of two children, I place a very high priority on maintaining and improving our area’s educational, social, and other services for children. As the parent of a special needs child, I know how important (and challenging) it is to ensure that all of Boone’s children get the education and support they need to make the most out of their futures.
Professionally, I am an associate professor and faculty librarian at Appalachian State University. Specifically, I am the collection management librarian for the social sciences. I select and evaluate materials for eight different disciplines. This position has helped me develop important skills in learning to balance divergent needs and reach decisions that maximize resources to the benefit of all. I am also very active both in scholarship and professional organizations. I am currently an associate editor for the journal North Carolina Libraries and have published articles on numerous issues in my field.
I enjoy spending time with my family, hiking in surrounding green areas, working in my yard and garden, reading, relaxing with friends, and enjoying cultural events.
I would welcome the opportunity to serve the residents of Boone and to bring my voice and theirs to the table in meeting the challenges ahead, and I welcome Boone residents to contact me with their concerns any time.
