Dear Friend,
As we all celebrate Independence Day, we wanted to remind our friends that the founders of our country and our state placed such importance on the fair, impartial, and equal administration of justice that they created independent judicial branches for our federal government and for North Carolina. In these days of hyper-partisanship, we thought it would be appropriate to stop and consider that, in giving us an independent judiciary, our founders strove to insulate our courts from partisan politics and guarantee that everyone who seeks his or her day in court is treated fairly.
More recently, the state of North Carolina has created a system of public financing for candidates for judge, to prevent the spread of partisan big money influence to our courts.

Together, the three of us have 30 years of experience on the North Carolina Court of Appeals. We know first-hand how important it is that our judicial system remain independent and free from partisan politics.
