The Watauga County Democratic Party is organizing its second “cash mob” that will visit two Boone businesses on Saturday, August 25.
The Party’s first “cash mob” in Blowing Rock in July infused close to $2,000 into the local economy. The Party hopes to do better in August. The “cash mob” will gather at the Appalachian Antique Mall in downtown Boone at 11 a.m., followed by lunch at the Mountain House in New Market Centre.
A “cash mob” is a way to encourage people to go into small, local businesses and spend their money as a group to give the business owners a little bit of economic stimulus.
“Cash mobs” are a part of a national trend to “buy local.” The first such organized cash mob occurred in August of 2011 in Buffalo, N.Y., and has since spread to many other states.
“People had such a good time at our first cash mob,” said WataugaDems Volunteer Coordinator Marsha Walpole, “and we intend to keep this ‘buy local’ movement going as long as we can. It’s clearly good for the entire community.”
“We chose the antique mall because there are dozens of small businesspeople represented in there,” said Walpole, “and of course the Mountain House has been struggling since it was displaced by Cracker Barrel.”
