Who may register to vote?
The criteria are simple. You must be:
- a US citizen,
- a resident of North Carolina,
- 18 years old or older on or before election day
There is no waiting period to be eligible to register to vote. If you have just moved to Watauga County, you may register to vote as soon as you move into your new home.
How can I register to vote?
You may register at the Watauga County Board of Elections (ground floor of the County Courthouse) or when renewing or updating your driver’s license. You will be asked for your full name, your mailing address and street address, and your date and state of birth. You do not have to have a driver’s license to register.
At Motor Vehicles:
You can go to Motor Vehicles and register there. Keep your receipt until you receive confirmation from your local election official. If you do not receive any confirmation, please contact your local election office to verify your voting status.

What should I do if I’ve changed my address since I registered?
If you have moved within Watauga County, go to the Watauga County Board of Elections to fill out a change of address form.
Are there deadlines for registration?
The deadline to register to vote in this state is 25 days before the day of the election. Those exact dates change with each election cycle. Please consult the Party Calendar at right or call the Board of Elections: 828-265-8061.
How do I vote Absentee?
Every citizen is eligible to vote by mail if they can not get to the polls on election day.
North Carolina has specific absentee voting requirements. Contact the Board of Elections (address below) and request an absentee ballot or call 828-265-8061. The Board of Elections will mail the ballot to you after they receive your completed form.
